Why Are Over 65s Charged More?

We asked several leading insurance companies why they charged more for travel insurance products aimed at over 65s. Whilst one pointed out to us that cheap travel insurance wasn't always good travel insurance, and that it is important to look at levels of cover. The answer we heard most was that when you are over 65 you are more of a risk and insurance companies are obviously trying to minimise that risk. Whilst understandable, we think that this overgeneralisation is wrong. Why not base travel insurance premiums on circumastances that aren't age related. What do you think?
